The Paint Creek Recruiting Station will be open from 10 am to 5 pm both days. Come and Join Us - New members are wanted for Company C Oakland, Wayne & SE Michigan and also for Company E - Macomb, Lapeer, and the Blue Water Area.
A very Special new feature for 2008 will be a
U. S. FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY on
Sunday May 25, 2008.
Everyone is invited to join us
as we demonstrate a proper way to honor
and dispose of a tattered and torn US Flag.
This special ceremony will be our conducted in place of the usual G.A.R. Memorial Day Service.
Current and former members of the United States Armed Forces are invited to join us for the ceremony
Other new features for the 2008 Heritage Festival will includue:
Civil War Skirmish on Saturday based upon an actual battle that took place near Nashville, Tenn in April, 1863.
Public Civil War Drill - Come, Fall in Line, and learn the basics of the march to drill like a soldier in 1863.
Recreation of a Civil War era Sutler - The Sutler was the Civil War version of the modern Post Exchange and sold goods to the soldiers of the Federal army. THE SUTLER WILL BE OPEN FROM 10 AM TO 5 PM BOTH DAYS !!!
Recreation of "Miss Belle's Tavern" - A place for the soldier to visit when off duty - Just as long as the Provost Marshall doesn't catch you!!!
Recreation of the Execution of Private Julius Milika. Private Milika was a member of the Tenth Michigan Infantry in 1862 and 1863. He deserted from the regiment and was tried by a general court-martial on the charge of desertion. Private Milika was executed on May 15, 1863.
The year of 2008 is the 145th Anniversary of the year of 1863 and the mid point of the American Civil War.
The Sutler, Regimental Supply, will be on site with a full shop of period Civil War goods for both the reenactor and the general public. Don't miss this first time event at Rochester.
